An Interview with Professor Silas J. Leavesley at University of South Alabama

Prof. Silas Leavesley talks about imaging technologies to detect colon cancer at an earlier stage. His recent work on excitation scanning hyperspectral microscopy enabled by VersaChrome® tunable filters look at native fluorescent molecules, or autofluorescent molecules, for tissue diagnosis. This proof-of-principle system demonstrates that the spectral properties of the cancer tissues look different than the spectral properties of normal surrounding tissue – and forms the basis for early stage cancer detection. As a CEO and co-founder of a startup company Prof. Leavesley and colleagues are working on taking their research to the next level by developing translational devices such as gastrointestinal endoscopes that are expected to reach patients during coming years. Read More...
