Semrock Introduces BrightLine® Fluorescence Filter Sets Specially Optimized for FRET
New filter sets provide superb brightness and contrast for FRET imaging, with the no-burn-out reliability of exclusively hard-dielectric optical coatings.

ROCHESTER, N.Y., February 28, 2007

Semrock, Inc., the leading manufacturer of high-performance optical filters for the Biotech and Analytical Instrumentation markets, today announced that it has extended its popular BrightLine series of high-performance fluorescence filters to include sets specifically optimized for key Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) imaging applications. These new sets are designed for the most popular live-cell compatible FRET fluorophore pairs: blue-to-green, cyan-to-yellow, and green-to-red fluorescent proteins (including new monomeric red fluorescent proteins such as mCherry). And, the sets work well with a variety of other fluorophore donor-acceptor pairs. Each set consists of one excitation filter, one dichroic beamsplitter, and two emission filters, so they are ideally suited for the demanding motion-insensitive detection FRET requires in microscopes that are outfitted with an emission filter wheel or with a dual-camera detection module.

Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) is a powerful technique for characterizing distance-dependent interactions on a molecular scale. It is one of the few tools available that is able to measure intermolecular and intramolecular distance interactions both in-vivo and in-vitro. “Because FRET measurements are so difficult, having the right optical filters can make all the difference in order to maximize the fidelity with which accurate ratiometric calculations can be made,” said Dr. Turan Erdogan, CTO of Semrock. “We have responded to popular demand by introducing the only high-performance, hard-coated sets specially optimized for FRET. This unique performance is achieved by combining the industry-leading high transmission, steep edges and deep blocking that all BrightLine research sets are known for, with careful designs resulting from sophisticated optical system modeling. The optional certified “ZERO pixel shift” performance that is readily available for the most demanding multi-color imaging applications is facilitated by the single-substrate construction that is the hallmark of all BrightLine filters.”

Like all of Semrock’s standard BrightLine fluorescence filter sets, these new FRET sets are available from stock. And every Semrock filter, without exception, is made with hard dielectric optical coatings for permanent, “no burn-out” performance.
