Director, Manufacturing Engineering – Optical Filters for Biotech & Analytical Instrumentation

Semrock, Inc. – based in Rochester, New York – develops and manufactures high-performance optical thin-film filters that set the standard for biotech and analytical instrumentation. Semrock is a rapidly growing company, with revenue from both the volume OEM sales of tailored products and from the sales of standard catalog products to end-users. Semrock’s optical filter products are set apart by their state-of-the-art performance and reliability. Major markets include optical filters for fluorescence imaging and measurement systems and for Raman and laser analytical instrumentation.

Position Summary:

In support of its expanding business, Semrock is looking for a highly professional and talented Director of Manufacturing Engineering to join its Manufacturing team. The Director of Manufacturing Engineering will lead and direct the activities of the Manufacturing Engineering Group, supporting the coating and glass finishing operations of Semrock’s optical filter production facility. This team is responsible for ongoing quality, yield and process improvements, and for new product and new process introduction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide insightful leadership of the Manufacturing Engineering Group professional staff.
• Identify, plan and implement manufacturing projects according to return on investment
• Identify and implement manufacturing improvements with focus on elements contributing to lost time, redundant operations, and scrap.
• Assure that all production processes are robust and are fully documented.
• Support day-to-day production requirements through process monitoring, operator training and troubleshooting, with an emphasis on   product quality.
• Prepare CAPX analysis and budget that supports scalable production volumes, metrology, test, manufacturing improvements and   equipment replacement.
• Lead new-product and new-process introductions for Manufacturing.
• Drive projects to successful completion on schedule and within budget.


Skills and Characteristics:

Must have a clear ability to lead engineers and engineering projects, while offering insightful judgment and decisive decision making. Must be data driven and results oriented. The opportunity will require a mix of optical and mechanical skills, along with a solid understanding of basic optics and optical measurements. Knowledge of thin-film optical filters and the surface properties of optical glass will be helpful, as will the ability to implement, document and otherwise clearly communicate the solutions to an array of metrology issues. To be effective in this role the applicant must have excellent written and oral communications skills. The right person will enjoy the challenge of a dynamic, small company environment. This person will be both a true leader and a team player.


Education / Experience:

• This position requires a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Optics, Physics, Materials Science, or related field along with 5+ years   experience in an industrial environment.
• General experience with a wide range of manual optical inspection processes (such as the determination of scratch-dig properties of   glass) is a plus.
• Familiarity with glass handling and optics production techniques (especially glass cleaning, coating and machining) is a plus, as is an   understanding of common optical measurement techniques (e.g. spectrophotometry and interferometry).
• Previous software programming (C, Visual Basic, Matlab) and automation skills are a plus.


Reporting and Location:

The position is based in Rochester, New York and will report to the Vice President of Operations.
