Thin Film Design Engineer – Optical Filters

About Semrock:

Semrock, Inc. – based in Rochester, New York – develops and manufactures high-performance optical filters that set the standard for biotech and analytical instrumentation. Semrock supports its market with three product platforms, including high-performance optical filters for: fluorescence instrumentation & microscopy, Raman instrumentation, and biomedical laser systems.

Position Description:

Semrock is currently looking for a highly talented optical Thin Film Design Engineer to join its seasoned team. The right candidate will have significant experience with thin film coating design and technology. Specific job responsibilities include:

• Develop sophisticated and manufacturable thin film designs for new products;
• Work as part of a team to incorporate new designs and methods into the manufacturing process;
• Maintain and improve optical monitoring software algorithms;
• Work with applications engineers to support customer product development activities, specification development, and design estimates;
• Enhance capabilities by introducing new design techniques and algorithm development.

Key success criteria for this position are: customer satisfaction (as measured by product performance versus specification at minimum cost), rapid design turnaround (as measured by on-time design delivery), design manufacturability (as measured by internal manufacturing metrics, such as reproducibility and yield).

Background and Qualifications:

Success in this position requires the applicant to have:

• A minimum Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline, such as Optics, Optical Engineering, Physics, or Electrical Engineering;
• A minimum of 5 years optics industry experience with Bachelor’s, 3 years optics industry experience with Master’s, 1 year optics industry design experience with a PhD;
• Experience designing sophisticated optical thin film products using commercial design software, such as TFCalc, or the demonstrated ability to learn quickly;
• An ability to create manufacturable, cost-effective designs meeting customer specifications;
• Familiarity with optical systems, with experience in the use of crystal and optical monitoring systems to control thin film deposition highly desirable;
• The ability to improve design capabilities through the introduction of new design methods and monitoring algorithms;
• Experience delivering results under time and budget constraints;
• Programming experience in C# or C++, and Matlab;
